Xserve an impressive multitude of potential used Server

By: Monica Craft

Xserve is the name of Apple Computer's Macintosh 1U rackmount line of server computers.

While Apple's first foray into the server market in 1997 was a spectacular failure by way of Network Servers that ran AIX 4, the introduction of OS X in 2000 and the later rollout of the G5 PowerPC processor from IBM present strong arguments for its adoption now.

Not known for being a server-side company, Apple representatives confirmed that the company took its efforts to penetrate the enterprise market very seriously and spoke to hundreds of companies during product development. This approach resulted in the creation of a powerful server with many conveniences ready-made for Web hosting.

The Xserve can be used for a variety of applications, including file server, web server or even high-performance computing applications using clustering - a dedicated cluster Xserve, the Xserve Cluster Node, without a video card and optical drives is also available.

The ability to drop an Xserve into a Web hosting network with little or no disruption is probably the first and most visible benefit of its use.

The Xserve packs phenomenal power and industry-leading capabilities into a high-density, 1U rack mount server that fits easily into any network environment. And this award-winning UNIX-based server just got a 5x performance boost over the Xserve G5, thanks to quad-core 64-bit Intel Xeon processing.

The fifth-generation Xserve is packed with features designed to meet your needs. Powered by the dual-core Intel “Woodcrest” Xeon processor running at up to 3.0GHz, this quad-core 64-bit system delivers performance up to 5 times faster than the Xserve G5. For flexible storage, there’s support for both SATA and SAS — and up to 2.25TB of internal capacity. Internal ATI Radeon X1300 PCI Express graphics is included with a mini-DVI output with VGA support. Dual redundant power supplies give extra piece of mind. And you can control it all from across the hall or around the world, thanks to integrated lights-out management hardware and powerful, easy-to-use software.

Xserve comes with Mac OS X Server, the UNIX-based server operating system that includes a complete suite of standards-based network services. Beyond fast file and print services, Mac OS X Server provides cross-platform management, imaging, and security capabilities, and collaboration features that integrate seamlessly with the desktop user experience. There is also support for POP and IMAP mail, ftp, QuickTime Streaming Server, DNS, and DHCP — right out of the box. And because an unlimited client license for Mac OS X Server is included at no additional cost, you can save hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars on licensing fees.

The Xserve comes bundled with an unlimited license for Mac OS X Server, Apple's robust server software based on BSD Unix. This means that you can buy an Xserve and offer files, Web services, and audio/video streams to an unlimited number of users at no additional cost. The Xserve package also contains Apple's WebObjects Web applications development and deployment software, Apple's QuickTime multimedia server suite, and scores of open-source packages, including the Apache Web server and the Tomcat Java application server. All of this makes the Xserve a well-appointed and economical server solution.

Additional features include up to 2.25TB storage, two eight-lane PCI Express slots, dual onboard Gigabit Ethernet, and a combo drive. In short, the Xserve is an impressive server with a multitude of potential uses, excellent ease of use, plenty of storage, and a software configuration that allows for an unlimited number of connections—all at a truly reasonable price. With all this, the Xserve provides the stability you need and the performance you want, all at a great price.
