What are the differences in concrete stains?

By: Matthew Evans

Carpet, wood and tile have been standards for flooring solutions for years. Concrete staining has been around for about 30 years, but now it has caught the attention of the public and is highly desired as a rich and elegant floor finish that can be customized to every owners tastes. They are resistant to moisture, and impact which would destroy or heavily damage conventional floor applications. The biggest difference between concrete stained floors and other flooring is that it is a one of a kind surface. No other floor will be identical. Stained concrete brings out a certain character in the surfaces they are applied to. Enhancing nuances in the surface make this a highly sought after solution. Technology in this industry have allowed for stains to vary in appearance depending on the way they are carried. Some are acid based, water based, acetone based, and even alcohol based. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. It all depends on the desired look on which stain will be used. Texture of the surface also helps to determine final appearance. Cracks and patches also create unique appearances.

Which stain is right for me?

From their names you can see that the inherent difference is that one is carried by acid, and the other by water (an acrylic sealer). This is not where the differences stop. Depth of penetration, color selection, and basic application are all differences between the two. Water base stain is similar to water colors you may have played with as a kid. They are topical, and creative designs and mottling effects are created by adding more or less water to the application. Staining with water base concrete stain allows a greater color spectrum as any color can be created, mixed, and blended together to create any desired outcome. Along with the water, acrylic sealers are added to allow the stain to "stick" to the surface. Even though they are sealers, a top coat is highly recommended after the desired look is achieved.
Mineral salts and muriatic acid are the general make up of Acid Stains. The acid breaks the top surface to allow the mineral salts to penetrate, and react with the pores of the concrete to permanently change the color of the concrete. Due to many differences and concentrations in concrete the applicator has limited control over how the stain will look once the reaction is complete. It is always recommended to do a sample on the surface prior to applying any type of stain especially acid stain.

How much does it cost in comparison to carpet, wood, or tile floors?

Staining concrete is another option for flooring like wood, tile, and carpet. As stated before that the concrete is sealed so it is more resilient that other surfaces, as well as being waterproof. Final costs are determined by how many colors are used, surface applied to, design elements, and intricacy of design. If the concrete is in new condition is can be stained without having to rehab the surface. If the surface is damaged, or stained then a micro topping or resurfacing the surface may be necessary. This will provide a new canvas for the stain to be applied. Although this does increase the cost, it is negligible compared to the appearance of the finished project being a pristine surface with a beautiful and elegant stain.

How do I care for a stained concrete floor?

Among the advantages of stained concrete floors they are hypoallergenic, waterproof, and resilient. Allergens, and other things like pet dander find their homes in carpet. Stained grout in tile is unsightly, and moisture will cause wood floors to warp, and discolor. Stained concrete floors are hard surfaces that are sealed therefore they are impervious to water and the damage it can cause. So clean up is quite easy. A mop and a neutral cleaning agent it all it takes. To keep a luster on the surface it can be mopped with wax. A non buffing wax is perfect for residential applications while a high speed burnisher can also be used to bring out a mirror like shine that is common to be seen in casinos in Las Vegas.

Once you have your new stained concrete surface, enjoy it. It is definitely a conversation piece at your next dinner party or game night with friends. You can now start to see many areas around your home where you can use concrete as a surface. Concrete counter tops, showers, pool decks, patios, businesses, or balcony decks can all be done with concrete coatings.
