Freeport, Maine is the small town generally known as the birthplace of the state of Maine. It was founded as a small parcel of land attached to the town of North Yarmouth in the late 18th century. In fact, the town was freed from North Yarmouth on the Fourth of July in 1889, the date that coincides with our nation's independence.

Situated on the Atlantic Coast, Freeport, Maine thrives on the fishing industry with fish and lobsters coming in from the cold Atlantic waters. Besides fishing, the town made it big building ships in the good old days and still continues to do till date. You can visit the historic shipbuilders in Freeport to see how ships were built in the past.

Getting to Freeport, Maine is quite simple. The town is a quick 20 miles from Portland and only about a two hour’s drive from Boston. If you are planning on visiting Freeport, consider making the drive from Boston. Especially during the fall months when the foliage is especially gorgeous, this trip is a beautiful way to experience fall in the Northeast. A quicker way to visit Freeport is to fly directly into Portland and then make the drive from there. It will take approximately a half hour to make the trip one-way.

Without a doubt, the most popular attraction in this beautiful Maine town is L.L. Bean. Long home to the incredibly durable outdoor outfitters, people come from near and far to visit the flagship store and factory. The flagship store boasts an indoor trout pond and rock climbing wall. Open 24 hours a day each and every day a year, make the trip to visit where it all began!

Maine is known for its great outdoor activities because of its natural beauty. You can enjoy Mother Nature at its best walking, hiking, or biking the trails and parks in or around the town. If you climb the Bradbury Mountain, you will see some incredible views of the surrounding area from its summit. Outdoor activities in Maine are especially enjoyable with the family. You can see these marine mammals in their native environment by taking a seal boat tour that include visits to the Sequin Island Lighthouse or Eagle Island also.

Puritan nature lovers would be delighted to make a visit to the Wolfe's Neck Farm. The farm is a sprawling 600 acre complex where the animals are raised without any hormones and antibiotics. You would learn how taking this untreated meat is good for your body and what organic cattle and sheep grazing is all about. Kids would love to watch the sheep grazing in the beautiful, lush green fields.
