Top Decorating Mistakes to avoid

By: Gichuhi Elijah

Are you tired of doing the same mistakes and expecting different results while decorating your house? The following are often the common decorative blunders and how to avoid them.

Purchasing new furniture before measuring the room. Many home owners rush into buying furniture without taking time to plan. Before you make an invested in furniture, measure your space and think of the place where you’re going to put the piece. This will ensure that the furniture fits through the door and deep into the rooms.

Too many photos. Photo people have a hard time giving up the pictures they have all over the walls and tables. Unfortunately, nothing is special because you don’t know where to look. The ultimate solution would be to display just a few framed pictures.

Having your collectibles scattered all over the house. Whether you are collecting figurines and samples or salt and peppers shakers, you shouldn’t put everything everywhere. The solution is grouping them together and within no time you would have created a big impact with small things.

Arranging furniture in the wrong way. Many home owners arrange their furniture in such a manner that it doesn’t allow direct traffic through the room. They also have a tendency to leave open the middle of the floor thinking that the room will appear larger. The solution is arranging the furniture in such a manner that would allow easier movement within the room. Group the furniture at the center of the floor.

Buying small rugs and floating them in the middle of the room. Area rugs should be large enough to fit the room perimeter. A rug adds color and is a connector between pieces of furniture. Tuck it under the front legs of chairs, sofas, and tables, as it may pose a safety hazard, if left unattended.

Using slip covers that distract your furniture. Slip covers are good for covering up worn fabric or patterns on fabric or patterns on fabric that are out of style or don’t go with your décor. Avoid using a clear vinyl slip cover to protect your beautiful silk fabric at all cost. They are awful though you may be tempted to use one.
