The Rugged Beauty of Idaho

By: Sonia Carstens

Tourism is a lucrative industry in all countries, and states have to do their best to convince people to come to their state and spend some time and money there. The advertising strategies often include exaggerations and the usual superlative experiences of their particular state. Whether in print or electronic media they vie with each other to attract the maximum number of tourists.

However, the reality is the stark opposite. The advertising is not always true or just partially true. The places they mention do exist but not in the same way as they are mentioned in the advertisement. Then there are commercials that boast of a plenty of outdoor activities for the tourists. But the reality often turns out be something else.

Unlike most places, Idaho is the real deal. It is not trying to bill itself as the theme park capital of the world or some gambling mecca where you can either leave rich or catch the bus home. Idaho is just a beautiful place in the world that has only its natural wonders to attract visitors.

It is a fact that the state of Idaho has the most wildlife acres under federal protection in this country. The largest protected refuge is Boise National Forest and it boasts over 2.6 million acres of land and water to explore.

Next in size is the Idaho National Forest. This popular tourist destination was created by combining three other national parks: Coeur d'Alene, Kaniksu, and the St. Joe National Forests. Located in the northern region of the state, the Idaho National Forest is a favorite spot for outdoor lovers as it offers visitors a wide range of activities.

The Idaho National Forest also boasts of the most rugged terrain of the whole Rockies Mountains. Its four mountain ranges - Selkirk, Cabinet, Coeur d-Alene, and the Bitterroot Mountains - pose challenge to the rock climbers who come here from all over the world to challenge their rock climbing skills. It is difficult to locate accessible paths up the mountainside because of the rugged terrain. This makes rock climbing a difficult task.

Not only rock climbers but even hunters and fishermen come to Idaho to test their skills. Hunters find the mule deer, Rocky Mountain Elk, and other big game animals in Idaho. It’s not surprising to find a lot of visitors during hunting season who come hoping to bag a trophy. The fishermen hope to get hold of great salmon. That explains why the area is a hot bed for fishing enthusiasts as well.

Idaho is just the place for you if you love untouched landscapes and the rugged beauty of Nature. You may not find the usual tourist attractions here, but what Idaho gives is peace of mind and an absolutely unforgettable experience. The mountains, rivers, lakes, and streams of Idaho will be waiting for you when you arrive but do bring your friends along to share your joy and excitement with them.
