Scrapbooks for Beginners

By:

First of all, what is a scrapbook? You’ve seen it on TV, you’ve read the magazine, and you’ve got friends who already have their own creations. So what exactly is it and how do you get started?

First of all, you need to understand that a scrapbook is not like a photo album or a diary, where you put in photos or notes arranged by date and time. It’s more like a assortment of things that represent the “non-eventual” aspects of your life, like dreams, goals, relationships, etc. Scrapbooking allows you to commemorate the important things in your life that otherwise wouldn’t be included in an album.

There are a few things to think about before starting a scrapbook. You might want to think about what kind of scrapbook you’ll create. Will it be a chronological album that follows moments in your life? Or perhaps it will follow a specific theme? You may want to consider this carefully before starting on your first page. For instance, you might have 30 years worth of photos in a box, but surely you’re not planning on including all of them in your scrapbook. Instead, why not create a scrapbook for all the foreign places you’ve visited?

You don’t have to use every photo in your collection to make a gorgeous and meaningful scrapbook. In fact, it’s even recommended to use as little pictures as possible! Don’t give yourself the pressure of trying to scrapbook every picture you’ve got in the box. You won’t be able to deal with all of them creatively and in such a way that will recreate the memories and experiences as meaningfully as you want to, so save yourself the burden.

You don’t have to spend a lot of time working on your scrapbooks. I’ve heard about people that would like to start on this hobby, but they’re afraid that it would take up too much of their time. Well, they’re completely wrong. You can either spend 4 hours a day scrapbooking or 1 hour every weekend; it doesn’t matter at all! Scrapbooking doesn’t have to be a full-time job and you don’t have to make a schedule for it.

Forget about the complicated decorations. You don’t have to fill your scrapbook with decorations or artwork to make it beautiful and unique. The most important elements of any scrapbook are the pictures and the stories behind them. I know several people who give themselves headaches trying to copy the beautiful artwork that they see on other scrapbooks. They fail to truly experience the enjoyment that this hobby is supposed to be all about.

If you need more information about scrapbook ideas or scrapbook supplies, there is a wealth of information on the Internet. There are also excellent supply stores for scrapbook materials. If you don’t have too much time to spend on scrapbooking, stop worrying about it. This is a hobby, not a job. It can be a lifelong pursuit, or just a vehicle to capture all the things that make up the real you.
