Moving Faq: Things You Need To Know Before You Move

By: Manerva Archer

* How much does moving cost?

It depends on the moving company you have chosen. Some moving companies base their fees on the relocation area, meaning the closer your new location is to the old one, the smaller your bill will be. Moving locally is almost always cheaper than moving a long distance.

* What kind of moving companies should I consider when moving internationally?

If you're relocating due to your job, your company will probably already have a mover for you. Otherwise, you should be looking to find a mover as early as possible. There is more to consider in an international move than a local move and it pays to get the process started well in advance.

Your ideal choice would be a moving company with international experience. Even better is to find a mover in the country to which you are moving. A mover in that country will be better equipped to move your possessions to your new home quickly, safely, and to help manage paperwork.

Most international moving companies will want to view your possessions before giving a quote, especially if you plan on moving the entire contents of your home. Understand that most international quotes are based on weight or volume of the load, so your initial quote may not be the final price you pay. Thus, it is to your advantage to get the moving company to come into your home and provde as accurate a quote as possible. Some companies will draw up an inventory for you. Ask them for this if they do not mention it. Also, ask them if they will include associated costs and paperwork in the quote, such as taxes, export and import documents, port and airport charges, customs clearance, and any other country specific charges that may apply. Read everything and make sure there are no hidden costs before you hire the moving company.

* Are there extra charges for moving especially heavy items?

Some moving companies require additional payment for heavy objects, but most do not. Carrying heavy items is considered part of a mover's job and is usually included in the service.

With many available moving companies today, you can choose which among them will give you the service you wish to have. Companies are battling for low-price budget packages since most consumers are looking for a service they can afford.

* What do I need to know about do-it-yourself moving?

Moving is not a simple task. There are things you need to think of before you can move to a new home. However, with proper preparation, you can make things work.

- First, you need to pack your things in an organized way, similar items together, and label each box clearly as to contents.

- Perishable food should all be packed together and kept separate from the other things.

- Secure drawers and doors in furniture items by taping them shut.

- In putting the boxes into the truck, load large boxes with durable items first, so that the smaller, more fragile things can be placed on top.
