Locating Your Home Generator

By: Sinead Douglas

You can spend thousands on ensuring that in a power outage you still have the ability to use vital appliances like hair straightening apparatus, (if you have teenagers you will not question that statement as being anything other than true), but you still have to maintain your installation.

Whilst your emergency power unit may well be automatic, this infers that it will come on automatically in the event of an emergency; it does not mean that it can maintain itself and keep itself in good working order without any mortal help. Nor does it mean that it can install itself somewhere sympathetic to its needs and requirements.

The best advice you can follow is to let common sense be your friend. So for matters pertaining to location of your standby power generator:

Place it somewhere clean, dry and aerated, outside your house. To spell it out this means somewhere that isn't wet, damp, dusty, dirty or mucky. Somewhere that has good airflow so that fumes can escape out. Not under or near a window into your house.

If you have not had your generator fitted by a certified professional, then do yourself a favor and get it checked out by one. If it does not work because of faulty installation then you cannot claim on your insurance for any losses incurred during an emergency power outage. But more importantly, it is plain dangerous, to you, your family and people living close by.

If in doubt about anything, get on the phone and speak to the manufacturer. They will advise, and in many circumstances have trained specialists based all over the country on hand to support you.

Remember just because something says 'automatic' on the label or in the technical spec does not mean that it will climb out of the box, connect itself correctly to your mains electricity supply and keep itself clean and well maintained. Besides keeping hair straight, your standby power is responsible for keeping other vital services running when you need them. Services and appliances that can potentially save lives. Treat it with the respect it deserves. Don't cut corners.
