Lincoln Economy Outlook Strong for Future Growth

While most of the action takes place largely on the west and east coasts, the centrally located Lincoln, Nebraska also seems to be going places and looking forward to a bright future. In the coming decade, this city appears to have a strong economic and overall outlook. So, if you are thinking of relocating, you would do well to put Lincoln on your short list of potential places to consider.

By no means can Lincoln be deemed a large city. With a population of a mere 225,000, Lincoln combines the amenities of a large city with few of its attendant problems like escalating housing costs or high crime rates. Lincoln can be a great place to call home given its premium social services, its growing and diverse economy and a top notch education system including excellent options in secondary education.

The average income of someone working in the Lincoln area is 33,580 dollars per year. While only slightly above the national average, the figure appears to be more impressive when you factor in the relatively low cost of living for people living in the area. Lincoln is enjoying a period of economic growth and currently has a record number of people employed.

However, Lincoln's economic picture is not entirely without its trouble spots. In the manufacturing sector, for the last 5 years, the area had been suffering from a manageable but continual drain upon its manufacturing base. In fact, manufacturing jobs showed an increase for the first time in 5 years in the 2nd quarter of 2005.

Compared to the national average, the city of Lincoln as well as the rest of Nebraska has a higher percentage of senior citizens (i.e. above the age of 65). This leads to increased jobs in the health services industry, no doubt, but it also means a larger drain upon social services. Consequently, one can expect some funding and tax rate issues to crop up in the long term. However, that does not diminish the short term prospects for anyone in the health services industry if they plan to move to Lincoln.

Lincoln has survived drought conditions that continue to plague much of the state. In fact, the surge in finance and insurance related positions in this area have more than made up for any losses caused by crop loss and the drought. All this goes to show the immense potential of this place to offer opportunities in almost all fields except the manufacturing or agriculture industries. So, if you have the drive and determination to take advantage of opportunity, and are not particularly keen on agriculture or manufacturing jobs, Lincoln is a great place to call home.

When you think of relocation you have to weigh the economic conditions of the area carefully. The points in favor of Lincoln include its stable economy with a bright future, a relatively low crime rate, affordable housing, and a solid education infrastructure. No wonder, many people choose to relocate to Lincoln.
