Do You Use Tagamet, Pepcid, Axid Or Zantac?

By: Patrick Lewis

Tagamet (Cimetidine), Pepcid (Famotidine), Axid (Nazatidine), and Zantac (Ranitidine), are all members of the H-2 (histamine blocker) family of drugs. H-2’s are widely used for the treatment of Ulcers and Acid Reflux, as they greatly reduce the production of Stomach Acid.

Stomach Acid is responsible for breaking down food so that the elements of the food can be readily absorbed into the body. Products that greatly reduce the acid in the stomach can interfere with the absorption of important nutrients, such as Folate, Iron, Zinc, Cobalamin (Vitamin B12), as well as other minerals.

Folate (Folic Acid) is an important nutrient, and is already commonly deficient in the diet. Folic Acid is needed by the body to utilize Vitamin B12. People taking any kind of antacid, are advised to take a Folic Acid supplement.

Iron is critical to the delivery of oxygen to your cells, tissues, and muscles. Studies suggest that H-2 drugs can result in decreased dietary Iron absorption. Iron deficiency, also known as Anemia can result, even if your diet has sufficient Iron, due to the decreased absorption. Adult men and postmenopausal women should not take Iron supplements, unless directed by a physician!

Zinc is an essential trace mineral. Zinc has been found to be necessary for enzymes and enzymatic function, protein synthesis, and carbohydrate metabolism. Zinc is a constituent of insulin and male reproductive fluid. Zinc is needed for the proper metabolism of alcohol, to get rid of the lactic acid that builds up in working muscles and to transfer it to the lungs. Zinc is also involved in the health of the immune system, formation of bones and teeth, and Vitamin A utilization. Large amounts of Iron in supplements may decrease Zinc absorption. Zinc toxicity can occur if to much Zinc is absorbed, therefore check with your physician before taking any Zinc supplement!

Cobalamin (Vitamin B12) with folic acid is necessary for the maturation of red blood cells and the synthesis of DNA. B12 is also necessary for normal nerve function. It prevents Pernicious Anemia and plays a crucial part in the reproduction of every cell in the body. In food B12 is attached to proteins, and requires Stomach Acid to separate them and allows the B12 to be absorbed. B12 supplements are available in many forms. Sublingual and Injectable B12 claim a better absorption rate, since it enters the blood stream without involving the digestive tract.

Conclusion, if you use H-2’s frequently, see your physician and have blood tests taken on a regular basis. You’re H-2 may fix your heartburn, but it could possibly cause much worse conditions.
