Cost-Saving Tips for Purchasing Your Ceiling Fan

By: Ray Marx

Ceiling fans are one of the most cost-efficient additions that can be brought into practically any room. Not only do they increase airflow and create a more comfortable environment, but they also lower air conditioning bills and add to the personality of the room. Properly installed, these fixtures can bring comfort to your home for a long time to come.
The first step in the installation of your ceiling fan is to measure the room where the ceiling fan is going to be positioned. The size of the room has a direct effect on what size fan you need to buy and what size blades and down-rods are needed. To begin with, measure both the length and width of the area. Next, carefully measure the height of the ceiling so that you will be able to determine what down-rods, if any, will be necessary.
In addition to measuring the area in which the ceiling fan will be installed, you should also closely observe the design and style of the room to be sure that the proper style of fan is selected. A very traditional, rubbed-oil bronze fan should not be placed in a bright children's room, for example. The interior lighting scheme, the design of the home, and the ceiling fan should all match one another in style.
The fan you pick for your home should follow the size of the room - the larger the room, the larger the ceiling fan. A good means of judgment is to say that for a room up to 50 square feet, a 29" fan should be used. For a room up to 70 square feet, a 36" ceiling fan is the best choice, and for a space 100 square feet or more the better choice is a 50"-52" fan. These are relative estimates; in some situations, a couple of smaller fans might work better than a single large one.
Once you have obtained your ceiling fan, you should consider whether you are able to install the fixture yourself or if you will need to bring in an electrician. If you lack experience in this area, then it is highly recommended that you bring in a professional; this will ensure that the warranty of the fixture is kept in place, and it will also ensure your safety. If installing the fan is an undertaking you have chosen, then make sure that the ceiling is able to support the weight, and closely follow the included directions with the fixture regarding its wiring.
In trying to determine the mounting position of the fan, caution should be used. Usually, ceiling fans are mounted in the middle of the room so that the maximum level of air circulation can be achieved; however, ceiling fans should never be installed directly over beds for safety reasons. Also, fans should be mounted so that the blades are around 7'-10' from the floor. If you are installing on a higher ceiling, down-rods can be purchased to hang the ceiling fan lower.
Creating a more comfortable living environment can be a painless process if the proper steps are taken when choosing your ceiling fan. Keeping the essential factors in mind while shopping for the fixture that will fit your room perfectly will ensure that the ceiling fan will last a lifetime.
