Choosing an In-Dash Navigation System

By: B. Jones

If you are looking at purchasing a navigation system and has yet to decide, then you should read this. This will give you some tips on what to look for in an in-dash navigation system. It’s always better to be knowledgeable about any item you intend to purchase, so that you know exactly what you are paying for.

Before finally deciding which in-dash navigation system you should purchase, make sure that is meets all of your wants and needs are met. It also helps to do a little research and comparison between different brands so that you know what features are available in which brand and model. The first thing I usually look for is the ease of working with the screen’s control interface. I do not want to purchase anything that seems to complicate things for me while driving

There is also nothing more appealing than the size of the screen of your in-dash navigation system which shows the map to your destination. They usually come in a variety of sizes, but most are either 6 ˝-7 inches. Make sure that you also pay attention to the resolution of the monitor. Remember, the higher the resolution, the better and sharper the images are which makes the map formation easier to see.

The internal memory of your in-dash navigation system also plays an important role. This allows you to save or store the route you’ve programmed, which means you can remove the map disc and be able to play CD’s and DVD’s. In this case, the bigger the better is also true. You can store your map information, as well as music and movie file which is sure to save you or your friends from boredom when taking those long drives.
Navigation accuracy is also important since this will basically be your guide especially while travelling to an unfamiliar area. This is where the POI feature, or the point of interest, is one of the most useful features of this navigation system. POI plots on your map various locations such as gas stations, restaurants, and hotels. This saves you the trouble of having to drive around an unfamiliar town looking for these locations. Most navigation systems also allow you to program your own POI along the way to your destination.

Most people consider their time precious, and would hate to spend it being caught in traffic or congested roads. If you are one of these people, then I suggest you include the Real-time traffic data feature with your in-dash navigation system. With this option, you can receive real-time traffic information that tells you about traffic situations, as well as the average speed of traffic of the routes you have programmed. Also, traffic services are made available; they may be limited to metropolitan areas and require a little extra hardware.

So before finally making your decision about which brand of navigation system along with the available features you would like to have, look over the specifications and possibly read expert reviews about the system.
